I am scared of swinging on a swing. This is odd. I know. They are the best part of childhood, even adulthood. We get that happy feeling whenever we see empty swings. It brings out the feeling of the free-spirited child in us. I do get that happy feeling when I see a swing. The feeling becomes terrifying when I start swinging high. Scary. Today I took a risk to get over the scary. After my morning workout in the park, I walked to the swing, sat down, and played In You I Live by Housefires, one of my favorite Christian bands. I started swinging slowly, looking down at the floor. The scary started to overpower my thinking. As I was about to put my feet down to stop the motion, I looked up. There was this beautiful view of the sun hidden behind a tall green tree. I kept starring at that and suddenly the scary was diminishing. The more I focused on that tree, the more the scary was disappearing. The scary turned into a feeling of excitement and giggles. I started laughing while swinging as if no one was watching. I started enjoying that feeling. It all stopped when I looked down at the floor again. The giggles and excitement turned into the scary. Then I remembered to look up again and focus on one thing - the tree. Looking down when I swing gave me goosebumps due to my fear of height. Then I remembered when I was younger, I fell really badly from a swing. It was traumatizing. Since then whenever I get on a swing, I chicken out. It has now occurred to me why I am scared in the first place. I also became aware that the floor is what I walk on, it's not even that far looking down.If my feet can touch it, why am I scared of falling?
